Why?

I had my regular Wednesday Bible Study last night with the Senior High Students and one of the students invited a friend who asked the greatest question ever...Why?

Several times throughout the study of the Book of Proverbs he asked the question...Why? After the study finished he asked...Why?

He said..."A lot of my friends are telling me I should come to Winter Blast this year...but Why should I go?

I love when students ask that question because it means that they are listening and searching and checking things out for themselves. I told him that he should go so he could investigate what Christianity is all about. I told him to come and check it out and make a decision for himself. No one can make it for him...it's something between him and God. I think he is going to come and check it out.

I've said it before...I love the Sr. High Bible Study.

A Journey Through The Woods

I took my annual journey through the woods over Thanksgiving break. Hunter and I went out on Thanksgiving Day and traversed all over Walton Hill and through the farms fields. The snow was deep but we had a good time enjoying God's creation.

On Friday I went over to my Dad's farm with my brother in laws, Josh and Joe. We hit the woods with my dad and spent 3 or 4 hours walking in the beauty of Deer Creek Woods. It was awesome. We didn't shoot anything and the hunting wasn't exactly good but we sure enjoyed each others company and spending time in the quiet of the woods.

I noticed so much has changed since I last hiked through the woods. The local Beaver family changed the whole landscape and made several new ponds and diverted the creek further east. It was a whole new world in there.

I wish I could journey through the woods every day. Oh well...I look forward to the next time I can get away.

Whew...

So things have been pretty much a whirlwind lately. I was officially installed as the Interim Pastor at our church last week and things have been full speed ahead since then. I continue to preach 3 times a weekend, lead Sunday school, youth group and Bible study and everything else I used to do. Amazingly enough, I am not too tired and God has been so good.

I did the funeral for a church member and friend this week and that was really hard. That is one of the hardest things for me.

Sorry I haven't been on here more but things have been crazy. I'm taking some time this week to enjoy Thanksgiving and do some hunting. We will be up home in Meadville. We'll be back Saturday to start all over again.

Deployed

I've been wrestling with something for the last couple of weeks. It's one of those things that nags at you and catches up with you when you sit down and all is quiet, or when you lay down in bed and all you have is time to think. It's kinda like the question "why" that you really don't have an answer to.

I found out a few weeks ago that one of our church members/newlywed/new dad is being deployed to Iraq just after the first of the year. He is in training now and will only be home for 10 days before he is deployed. He has only seen his new son once and that was the day he was born. This has been hard on his wife who is home with the baby and raising him by herself. We too often forget about the sacrifice that those who remain at home make. It has really been gnawing at me the last two weeks. What can we do to help her through this tough time? What can we do to give James a proper send off on the 28th of December? How do we provide sufficient ongoing pastoral care in the months and years to come? How do we honor their sacrifice and service?

I remember being deployed for Operation Desert Storm and Desert Shield. I remember the emotions that came and went and how people at home dealt with things. But that was me. It's different when it is someone else. I often fight this guilty feeling of why not me? I've been through it before...let me go. Sometimes I want to jump back in the fight and defend ole glory and protect the freedoms that we have. I want to help those who are in need and oppressed. A part of me misses the U.S. Army. Once a soldier...always a soldier. I guess it's time to turn things over to a new generation.

They are very capable and very motivated. They see a cause greater than themselves. I guess it's time to play that support role and encourage them as they serve.

This Sunday is Veterans Sunday. The Sunday we acknowledge all those who have served and sacrificed for our country. It's also about their families and all that they have sacrificed as well. Here is a video I will be showing this Sunday during worship. Please take time this weekend and next week to remember those who gave so much for you and me. Let's all remember that Freedom is not really free.

Attitude

Well...it's over...finally...it seems like the election went on and on and on. That's because it did. Now it's time to move on. I am disappointed McCain lost and disappointed that Obama won, but it is what it is and God is still on the throne. It was fun poking at my liberal friends and they had fun poking back, I guess it's all part of the process. We really need to learn not to take ourselves so seriously.

This weekend I will be talking about attitude at our 3 worship services.

For the most part we (as a people) generally have pretty bad attitudes about stuff. We have really lost the joy of our salvation. I will be teaching from the Book of Philippians. We will look at Paul's attitude as he was locked in chains yet remarkably had a joyful attitude and unlike us, had a big picture mentality. Oh to be like Paul.

Maybe what we really need is an attitude adjustment. I don't know about you...but I think I'm do for another one. Keep your chin up...He said that He would never leave us or forsake us. I believe him.

How's your attitude? No...really.

Check It Out

NEW MINISTRY
Band of Brothers
Men’s Ministry
Starting Saturday December 6th, 2008

Calling all Men…on Saturday December 6th, 2008 we will kickoff our new Men’s Ministry “Band of Brothers”. The plan is to meet the first Saturday of every month for breakfast, fellowship and a devotional for us to wrestle with as we walk with God. We will meet in Hinman Hall from 9:00 a.m. – 10:00a.m.. We will have a special guest speaker on the 6th as we kick things off.

The slogan for the Band of Brothers is three words: Courage-Humility-Unity.
In this ministry of the Band of Brothers, we will strive to live and relate to each other with the Courage of the Father who was willing to sacrifice his Son, the Humility of the Son who was willing to die for us, and the Unity of the Spirit - currently residing in all believers. Be sure to mark your calendars now and plan on inviting a friend or two as we get together to launch this new ministry.

The Big "11"

Are you serious? Makenzie is really 11? I can't believe how quickly time flys. It seems like yesterday she was crawling around getting into everything. She is such a little lady now. She got an MP3 player for her birthday. She was so excited to be like the youth group kids. She wanted me to load it with all the Saturday night worship music. She asked if I could put the "drummer" guy on there.

I can't believe she will be officially in youth group next year. Thank you Lord for another good year. Thank you for shaping Makenzie into the strong little lady she has become.

Israel 2009??

It's been almost 10 years since I was last in Israel. I'm thinking about trying to arrange another trip back with some of our church members and friends. February or March are the best times to go when prices are low. It's a little chilly but not all that bad. I have a good relationship with some friends at Ed Hill Tours based out of West Palm Beach, Florida. No one, and I mean no one does a better job than the folks at Ed Hill Tours.

The trip is usually an 8-10 day tour and is absolutely incredible. They cover all the major sites and the food and lodging are top notch. You travel by private coach once in Israel. It was certainly a trip that I've never forgotten and I can't wait to get back. Perhaps now is a good time to head back over.

The cost including flight, deluxe lodging, food, transportation and all entry fees to the sites is around $2000. This is definitely a trip of a lifetime.

If you are interested please let me know. It's open to anyone and we will travel as a group. If I have enough folks who are interested I will go ahead and put everything in motion. Leave me a message.

Fall Is Here

So...I'm sitting outside on my deck overlooking the beautiful fall foliage. The trees are red, yellow, orange, green and many, many variation thereof. The birds are singing and the occasional trolley comes by. As it begins to get dark the crickets are chirping and for a brief moment...everything is just fine.

I love fall. It is probably my favorite time of the year. With all the chaos going on in the world with elections and the economy and work etc...it's just nice to step out away from it all and relax in His presence in His creation. No distractions, just me and Him. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Thank you Lord for loving us and sending your son to die on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins. I can't wait to meet you face to face someday. Thank you.

The Challenge

We're all faced with different challenges in life. Some easier than others. Tonight our Teen Leadership team was challenged to step up and provide better care for their peers. We to often get caught up in ourselves and our friends and we forget about those who are standing outside our holy huddle. We challenged one another to do a better job of reaching out and caring for those around us. I love our leaders and leadership team. What a blessing it is to work with those who have such a passion and love for the Lord....it's my prayer that we can spread that same love and passion to the rest of the church. Thank you Jesus...

Staff Lunch

Who would have thought that something as simple as a staff lunch would be so meaningful? I love the times that we get together as a staff to hang out and talk. We put all work aside and just share what's going on in our lives and laugh a lot. I love spending time with the staff, what a blessing. Praise God for the simple times in life when we can just enjoy each others company.

The food was pretty sweet too. Thanks guys for a great time.

Stay Strong

One of my all time favorite songs by the Newsboys:

Stay Strong

You're in the moment now
A bitter root
A wandering eye and then
The ties that bind start wearing thin, thin

You're in the moment now
When all you've been blessed with
Is not enough
Here's where the ground gets loose
Here's where the devils call your bluff

Stay strong
You are not lost
Come on and fix your eyes ahead
There's a new dawn to light our day, our day
You've gotta stay strong
You and I run
For the prize that lies ahead
We've come too far to lose our way, our way

We've seen the tragic flaws
The tortured souls
The saints with feet of clay
Here's where sin becomes cliche'

We've come through wilderness and watched
The cloud by day
The burning sky into dawn
Have you forgotten who you are?
Did you forget whose trip you're on?

Stay strong
You are not lost
Come on and fix your eyes ahead
There's a new dawn to light our day, our day
We've gotta stay strong
You and I run
For the prize that lies ahead
We've come too far to lose our way, our way

Get up, there's further to go
Get up, there's more to be done
Get up, this witness is sure
Get up, this race can be won
This race can be won

We've gotta stay strong
You are not lost
Come on and fix your eyes ahead
Our Father's dawn will light our day, our day
Come on and stay strong
His grip is sure
And His patience still endures
There'll be no letting go today, no way

Come on, and stay strong
You and I run
For the prize that lies ahead
We've come too far to lose our way, our way

Hunting Season

Hunting season is just around the corner and I'm thinking about heading out for the first time in a few years. I have my trusty 12 gauge but I'm looking for a good deer rifle. Anyone know where I can get a good one at a reasonable price? Anyone up for hitting the woods this fall? Let me know.

"Comfortably Uncomfortable"

God has called us to be "Comfortably Uncomfortable". He wants us to be comfortable in Him but uncomfortable enough to share the Good News with others. God has called us to be Fishers of Men and also to scatter seed (His Word). Who are you going to invite to church next week? Who will you take time to share your story with? Who's life will you build into this month? Take time to pray about who it is God wants you to build into this month. Leave me a note about who I can be praying for, for you.

A Season of Change

To the members and family of Peters Creek Church,

Greetings in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior!

It is with a mix of sadness, thankfulness and celebration that we write to you today. As you all know, for the last 12 years, Rev. Dr. L Rus Howard has done an incredible job as our Pastor. During that time, he and Rori have been exceptional spiritual leaders, great teachers and dear friends.

The last two years have been incredibly difficult and trying times, and have taken a toll on all of us. After much prayer, discernment and discussion, Rus feels that God is leading him in a new direction. As of October 19, 2008, Rus and Rori will be moving on to the next phase of their ministry and their lives. We as a Session are in agreement that this is truly the best for them and for us as a congregation.

We are very thankful for the unbelievable sacrifices that Rus and Rori have made for us over the last 12 years. Their supreme efforts have brought much joy and glory to our church and for that we are eternally grateful.

In accordance with the E.P.C. Book of Order, the Session of Peters Creek UPC hereby calls a meeting of the congregation on October 12, 2008 at 12:00 pm (immediately following the 11:00 service). At this meeting we will vote on accepting Rus’ resignation and act on the terms of the Dissolution of the Pastoral Relationship.

The Session has looked forward to, and is excited with, all the great programs that are up and running to grow the faith of all of us here at Peters Creek! We are also working with the EPC to be sure our ministry does not miss a beat after Rus leaves. Jeff and the rest of the staff are ready to step up and do everything needed to ensure that our worship continues to please our Lord! We will be also counting on all of our members to rise to the challenge and do all that we can to serve our church and community.

Again, please join us in extending your thankfulness and appreciation for all that Rus and Rori (and Jeff, Matt and Carmel) have given to our church!

We are planning a Farewell Celebration for Rus and Rori, immediately after the 11:00 am service on October 19, 2008. Please be sure to mark your calendar and be there in person.

While we are sad to see Rus and Rori move on, we are looking forward to God continuing to reveal his plan for Peters Creek and to lead us into the next exciting part of our journey with Him.

In His service,

The members of Session

The People Pleaser

“Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is kept safe.”- Proverbs 29:25

For we speak as messengers approved by God to be entrusted with the Good News. Our purpose is to please God, not people. He alone examines the motives of our hearts.
1 Thessalonians 2:4

If I've learned one thing this year so far it is this..."Our purpose is to please God, not people."

Can we ever really please people anyway? Because of our sinfulness we constantly want more or something different and we can never be pleased. I don't know if you've noticed but we can be pretty selfish and pretty hard to please. We pretty much spend the majority of our life trying to please somebody. It can be pretty exhausting and frankly you'll never accomplish it.

If we decided to follow the Word of God and try and please God we would be a whole lot better off. After all He is our creator and the one with whom we will spend eternity. Perhaps we ought to get to know Him a little bit better...I don't know ...Just a thought.

These ramblings spun out of a guys Bible Study I had last night with some pretty cool guys (Sean Toohey and Doug Maronde). The Wednesday night Bible Study is definitely one of the highlights of my week. It's a great time to sit and share what's going on in our lives and work through things together.

Take time this week to work on pleasing God and not people. Let me know how things begin to change in your life as you make this adjustment this week. Let me know what you think.

So...What Really Matters

Philippians 1:9-10

I pray that your love will overflow more and more, and that you will keep on growing in knowledge and understanding. For I want you to understand what really matters, so that you may live pure and blameless lives until the day of Christ’s return.

Lord help me to live out your good and perfect will as I go throughout this week. Please keep me focused on the Great Commission. Help me to love and grow in knowledge and understanding so that I may know you more. Please help to keep me focused on what really matters. God is good.

Steeler Tailgate Party

Attention all Jr. and Sr. High Students...join us next Sunday in the church parking lot before youth group for a Steeler Tailgate Party. We will be grilling, eating, playing games and hanging out as we get ready to cheer the Steelers on. Invite a friend you won't want them to miss out!!

In HIs Grip

Philippians 4:4-7

4Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

This scripture has been an encouragement to me this week/month/year. This is what I will continue to cling to in the days ahead. God is good.

Humbled...Again

So last week was a pretty lousy week I'm not gonna lie. I was having a pretty good pity party for myself and kind of moping around. It felt like this week was going to be more of the same. I have been preaching a series on the storms of life and well...there have been quite a few rolling through my life. So anyways...last night we had just finished dinner and my son Hunter ran into the house and said that he heard a cat crying in the backyard. I thought oh no not again...not another cat encounter. So this time I strapped on some thick leather gloves and headed out to investigate. When I arrived on the scene I saw a little black kitten in the bushes, I reached in and retrieved it and then another, and another, and another, and yet another. Five altogether in a hole in the ground and no mother around. So I put them in an animal carrier and took them into the garage. I had a meeting to attend so I left and when I got home I checked in on them and they were screeching away. I knew they were hungry and needed something to eat. They couldn't be anymore than a few days old. I found one of my daughter Makenzie's baby doll bottles and filled it with milk and proceeded to feed each of them one at a time until they were full and quiet. After about 30 minutes they were sound asleep for the night.

I sat down and thought to myself...for that brief 30 minutes there was no focus on me or the things going on in my life....the focus was on these helpless little kittens. It was a good reminder for me that God is bigger than the things going on in my life...He is bigger than any storm. I was humbled again and thankful that God loves us so much that he sent His Son Jesus Christ to die for the forgiveness of our sins. We are helpless like the little kittens and need a Savior to love us and guide us through this life. Praise God...

Band Of Brothers

Proverbs 18:24
A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

I am blessed to be surrounded by friends who truly stick closer than a brother. They are the kind of friends who have your back through thick and thin. They confront you when you're heading down the wrong road and stand beside you when the going gets tough, they laugh and rejoice with you when times are good.

I refer to these guys as my Band of Brothers...we have each others back. I know when I'm going through the valley they are praying for me. I hope they know that I am doing the same for them.

I have many brothers and sisters in Christ who I can count on. Thank you for your friendship. You know who you are and in due time everyone else will know too.

Thank you

Armor Up

Whenever you take a stand things always get thrown your way. The evil one hates it when we take a stand and begin to do great things for Jesus Christ. That's when he attacks and tries to distract us and take us off course. We're reminded in Ephesians 6...

10Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. 12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.
19Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, 20for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.

So today...yes this day...it's time to Armor Up...for tomorrow I must bring the Word of God to His people. It is my prayer that when I open my mouth the words God gives me I will fearlessly make known and share the Good News of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Please pray for me as I continue to pray for you. Blessings my friends...

Here's What's Coming In October on Saturday Nights

“Comfortable”
Expanding Our Comfort Zone

The world can be a very uncomfortable place—from the pressures at home and work to worldwide issues like poverty and war. So naturally, we seek out those things that will make us feel comfortable and secure. But true comfort isn’t necessarily found in lounge chairs and lattes. And when we focus solely on our comfort, we miss out on an enormous aspect of the life God designed for us. Sometimes we need to step out of our comfort zone. But how far do we step? And why would we want to?
In this 4-part series, we’ll look at the importance of stepping out of our comfort zone. And we see that the only way to experience the true comfort found in Jesus Christ is to make sure we get uncomfortable enough to do what he has called us to do.

October 4- Lazy Boy- Moving beyond the recliner approach to outreach

Recliners are the iconic symbols of comfort. They call to us and lure us to a life of relaxation and ease. And who wouldn’t want to be comfortable? After all, we live in an often uncomfortable world. But when it comes to the Christian life, comfort isn’t necessarily the goal. In fact, Jesus told his disciples to get out of their comfort zone and reach out to the world around them. He wanted them to get uncomfortable. In this message, “Lazy Boy,” we will take a unique look at being comfortable and challenge one another to get out of the recliner and begin to reach out to the world around us.

October 11- Tagged- Answering the question…”Why Am I Here?”

So many people wonder about the point of life. The philosophical question, “Why am I here?” is something that millions of people—Christ-followers and otherwise—long to answer. And we look everywhere for an answer. But in our search, we often miss what truly matters. Through Christ’s encounter with Zacchaeus, we will discover real meaning. And we see that the only way to really understand why we’re here is to get uncomfortable enough to say something, do something, and be something for those people far away from God. We are all going to spend forever somewhere—we’re tagged for eternity. And Christians must begin to see other people through that eternal perspective.

October 18- Godcast- Becoming fishers of men

“Follow me…I will make you fishers of men.” Those are some of the first recorded words of a seemingly simple carpenter from Nazareth . Yet with those words, Jesus Christ gathered together a group of ordinary fishermen and began to transform the world. Those same words resonate in our lives today. But so often, Christians forget the purpose of Christianity. So in this eye-opening message, we are reminded of the reason we are here. And as we reflect on Christ’s call on the shores of the Sea of Galilee , we realize the potential that comes when we simply learn to cast.

October 25- Friends- Friendship Evangelism

How simply being a friend can change someone’s life forever. The stories of those who found a savior through the loving and caring relationship of a friend.

What Is Your Foundation Built On?

Matthew 7:24 and 26 say, “Therefore, anyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” Conversely, he says, “Anyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.”

How do I build my life on the Rock? How do I make a call between the sand and the rock? How do I discover God’s best for me? How do I become like the wise builder? How do I do this?”

I’m glad you asked. The first suggestion: Take a soil sample. Measure the sand in your life against the rock in your life.

In I Corinthians 3:11 it says, “For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Christ Jesus.” Jesus is our Rock, and everything must revolve around The Rock. If it doesn’t, it’s simply sand. Take a soil sample. Take your laptop out or a piece of paper and hammer out what is sand and what is rock. Say “God, here’s my list. I need some help. Please help me. Show me what to do. Do I need to do some foundation work, some remodeling, maybe some demolition work?” Take a soil sample.

Another suggestion: Build on the right lot. Don’t just say, “I’ll just build here. I’ll just build there.” You could be pointing to a bunch of sand. Build on the right lot. Jesus said these words as He locked eyes with Simon Peter in Matthew 16:18, “Upon this rock I will build my church.” He did not say, “Simon Peter, you’re the rock and I’ll build the church on you.” No, he didn’t say that. He said, “Upon this Rock,” with a capital ‘R.’ “I am The Rock. I will build my church.

Let’s stop for a second. Do you know Jesus Christ personally? I said earlier that to know Christ, you have to make a faith decision. Have you made that decision? Have you taken that step? What you need to do—you can make it today, and it’s the best step you’ll ever take—is to simply say, “God, I’ve messed up. I’ve been in this sand trap. I’m building this sand castle. I admit that to you. I admit my sinfulness and turn from that, and I ask you, Jesus Christ, to come into every area of my life. I want you, Lord, to come into my life, and I want to build the foundation on you.”

That is how you become a Christ-follower. If you’ve already made that decision, you have laid a foundation on the rock. Maybe you need to keep building that foundation, supporting that structure. Jesus gave us a hint, “Upon this rock I will build my church.” What are you doing with the local church? It’s Christ’s major focus. What are you doing with the Bride of Christ? What are you doing with her, the local church? You say it’s important.
You say you’re on the rock, but do you build your schedule around it? Do you build your social life around it?

The storm will strike. It’s on the radar. Now’s the time to do the work. It’s going to hit. Don’t wait until the storm strikes. Don’t wait until the wind and the rain and all this stuff hits. Do it now.

Another suggestion—third, if you’re keeping score: Have your home inspected. Have your home, your house, your life inspected. The best inspection verses would be Psalm 139:23-24, “Search me, Oh God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.” “See if there be any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” Make that your prayer this week.

Did you know that three times in the Bible, the word of God, the Scriptures are compared to a mirror? What does a mirror do? The mirror really shows us who we are. We examine ourselves: the blemishes, the pimples, the bed head, whatever it is. It shows us who we are. And that’s Christianity. Christianity is not about you. It’s not about you, and it’s not about me. It’s about God. We don’t examine God, We say, “God, You examine us. You examine us.”

It’s all about obedience and obedience is not always fun, is it? Sometimes it takes discipline and vision and just plain guts to make it work.

This is an excerpt from the message I will be sharing this Saturday night at "The Creek". 6:00 p.m. at Peters Creek Church. Come join us for a great night as we worship Him.

Practice What You Preach

Holy Cow!! You better be prepared to practice what you preach when you step up to share the Word of God with others. Good grief...could the last two weeks be loaded with any more drama? Seems like one storm after another keeps rolling through. Not big storms mind you but the kind that get your attention and can easily distract you from the big picture. Hopefully they will subside soon...but probably not...we still have 3 weeks left in the series. Lord...it's in your hands...please help me navigate through these storms.

We Are Officially Kicked Off

What a great weekend!! We had our kickoff of our new Saturday night service "The Creek" and it went really well. We had approx. 115 people come out for a great night of Praise and Worship. Praise God for his wonderful love. We also had our kickoff for our Student Ministry at the DeWoody farm and had over 55 students come out for a bonfire, food and a lot of fun. What a great start to a new school year..we are going to have so much fun this year getting to know Jesus.

Student Ministry Kickoff!!

YES...finally we are just 6 days out from our Fall Kickoff for the Student Ministry. This summer seems like it was extra long. I am so excited to get back in the swing of things. We will kick things off Sunday Night at 6 o'clock at the DeWoody Farm for a bonfire, food and time to hang out and catch up on things. Sr. High Bible Study kicks off on the following Wed. at 6:30 in my office. Jr. High Chaos kicks off on the 14th at 9:45 in Youth Hall. Be thinking about who you are going to bring to each of these things as we get things rolling this year. I miss you guys and can't wait to get back together again. See you in a few...

5 Days and Counting

Whew...here we are 5 days out from the kickoff of our Saturday night service. Seems like everything is in place and all the up front work is complete. We are daily in prayer for those the Lord is going to bring and for His blessing on all who have worked so hard to launch this service. If you're searching for a place to belong and looking for somewhere where you can meet God and others who care about you stop by Saturday at 6 and worship with us.

Quick Update

I've been swamped with all the kickoffs coming up so I have neglected my blogging. Sorry about that...I hope to get back at it very soon. I will post an update on the happenings later tonight or sometime tomorrow. Stay tuned for more...

Can You Hear Me Now

“I love the LORD, for he heard my voice; he heard my cry for mercy. Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live.”- Psalm 116:1-2
It sure is comforting to have someone to go to when your down in the dumps, confused, anxious, angry, hurt, excited, happy or somewhere in between. The psalmist lays it out for us...God listens, God Cares. May I be more diligent in my quiet time, my prayer life and my witnessing for Him. Lord help me, help us to be more disciplined in our time alone with you.

We love you Lord, we know that you hear our voice; we know that you hear our cries for mercy. Lord thank you for turning your ear to us, we will call on your name as long as we live. Amen

You're Invited

I got to thinking tonight...when was the last time I invited someone to church? It's been awhile. When was the last time YOU invited someone to church? If it's been awhile, then what's holding you back? Are you ashamed of your church? Too busy? Too shy?

What possible reason could we have to not invite someone to come and hear the Good News? Really, there is no good reason. Maybe laziness, selfishness...I don't know...

Help me out here...what do you think? I'd like to hear your opinion on why we are not more inviting.

After all we have the greatest message in the world and we're not willing to share it with others...

What do you think?

Welcome Dusty

Well...after much deliberation and research we have added a new member to the Such house...her name is Dusty and she is a 2 year old Creme d'Argent rabbit. She's pretty laid back and loves the kids. We built her a hutch and she is adjusting to her new home nicely. She came from the East Liberty Animal Rescue League. Her previous owner turned her loose in North Park and she was rescued by a passerby. I'll keep you posted on the new addition.

Listening For God's Voice

What does the voice of God sound like? How can you be sure it is God speaking to you? I think God speaks in many different ways. I'm pretty sure I heard God speaking through a good friend of mine this a.m. when he delivered the morning message. My good friend Jim DeWoody spoke on prayer. He talked about how we really don't pray enough and more or less do it out of habit or just when we need something. We really never pray as a conversation between us and God. He talked about praying without ceasing. I think he really challenged us as a congregation to go back to basics and spend time talking with our creator. We closed the service by crossing the aisles holding hands and praying as a church family. It was a special time that drew us closer together and closer to God. Thank you God and thank you brother Jim.

One of those days...

Yep...today was just one of "those" days...nothing huge happened...just a bunch of little things that add up to...one of "those" days. You know what I mean...we've all had them and will continue to have them...they just happen and they are what the are...one of "those" days. We make it through them and move on to the next day.

Is it tomorrow yet?

I Have A Dream

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once proclaimed in a speech, “I have a dream”. Those words have been repeated time after time throughout history and still ring true in each of us today. We all have a dream. We all have something that we would love to do in our life. We all would love to make a difference. We are all called to different things and are all called to do something. Let me share my dream with you.

It has been a dream of mine to create a worship service that would reach people where they are; a service that would not be built on one person or one thing but centered totally on Jesus Christ. A service that when you walk in you feel like you belong, you fit in, you matter. Worship means many different things to many different people, yet when you strip it down to it’s foundation it’s all about God and not really about us at all. If we can create an atmosphere that directs and guides us back to this basic and foundational principle we will enter into God’s presence and experience authentic worship. I have a dream of a worship service that has heartfelt, spirit driven music, practical teaching from the word of God, prayer, communion and fellowship that ushers you into the presence of God. A service where we experience real life change and see many give their lives over to Christ.

The great thing about God is that he loves to take our dreams and make them a reality. Starting Saturday September 6th at 6:00 we will be introducing a new worship service at Peters Creek. Our hope is to reach out to the community and draw people into a life changing and saving relationship with Jesus Christ. The atmosphere will be more casual and laid back. The music will be different as we introduce a full praise band and team. You will experience some of the old and a lot of the new. The purpose and goal of the service is to serve as an outreach to the community while building up the believer and serving those around us. The service will serve to fulfill our mission statement to Reach-Build-Serve.

We have a traditional and a blended service on Sunday mornings that are working well and meet specific needs in the congregation. We are thankful for these services. We also understand that God has a bigger mission for us and that is to engage the community around us and reach out in additional ways.

We covet your prayers as we move closer to the launch date and would love to see you come out and join us as we get things off the ground. It is our hope that a group of folks would join us for the first few weeks to get things going. Take time to invite your neighbors, co-workers and family. We believe God is in this and will use this new endeavor to reach the hearts of many. Thank you for your prayers and support and we hope to see you on September 6th at 6:00. Let’s all share this dream together.

20th Class Reunion- 1988-2008

Are you kidding me? Twenty years has passed since my High School graduation!! That just seems unreal to me. I really don't think about these things because I guess I just get busy in the here and now. My neighbor asked me just yesterday how old I was, I told him the wrong age. Mind you it was not on purpose...I just don't think about these things.

I was getting ready to go to bed last night and I decided to hop on Facebook and check out any new stuff when a good Friend from High School messaged me and let me know that our 20th reunion was this weekend (Friday and Saturday night). That was a bit of a shocker...I hadn't heard anything about it. He highly encouraged me to come out and get together with the rest of the gang. I made it to my 5 year reunion for about 20 minutes...we ran over the horseshoe pit with my buddy Curt's car. We were known for doing stuff like that. We'll see if I can make it...the schedule is pretty crazy right now. I'll keep you posted.

Go West Young Man

It's been almost a year since I took the trip of a lifetime with my Dad and Brother out west to Montana and Wyoming. I still think about that trip almost everyday. You know...it wasnt anything super fancy or outlandish...just a couple of guys road trippin across the good ole USA. We had so much fun just hanging out and laughing. What incredible beauty, majesty and splendor. It was pretty much a perfect trip...I honestly would have done nothing different. I don't get to see my Dad and Brother as much as I might like and I guess that is why that trip seems so special. I hope we get to do another trip in the next year or so. It seems to get harder and harder as we pass through different stages of life. My brother Jeremy and his wife Melissa are getting ready to welcome another little one in another few months so that makes things a little more difficult to pack up and head out for a week or so. Who knows...God works in mysterious ways...for now I will continue to look back at the pictures and remember the great times when we went west and lived a dream together.

Signs, Signs, Everywhere Signs

So as part of our kickoff for our new service we decided to have some yard signs made up...pretty basic nothing fancy just our logo and the website address for the new service. Yeah right...so after 900 logo revisions and 20 different sign set ups we may finally have something going to production. It should take about 4 or 5 days for delivery and then we will get them up and out in the community. Again nothing fancy just the basics. Our Saturday Night Service website is: www.worshipatthecreek.com

The site is being constructed as we speak and will look completely different than it does now. We just put something up in the short term.

Other than that things are progressing nicely. First rehearsal is tomorrow night. We built the stage flats and will paint them tomorrow and sermon prep and other things are coming together nicely. We're pretty excited. Kickoff is still scheduled for September 6th at 6:00. We'll keep you posted. Now...here is the infamous yard sign!!

Losing Your First Love

I will be preaching next Sunday at 8:30 and 10:00 at our church as the Teaching Pastor is away on vacation. I've been wrestling with the whole topic of keeping your relationship with God fresh...not letting it get stale or falling away completely. I guess this led me to teach on the topic of "Losing Your First Love". I guess in reality we are all just a few steps away from doing just that...for some maybe you're even closer.

We all remember our first love don't we...it's kind of hard to forget. We all tend to remember most of our firsts in life. The first car, first house, first vacation etc...But what about our first love...not a boyfriend or girlfriend but that relationship formed with the God of the universe.

In Rev. 2:1-5, as Jesus looked at that church, He saw many positive things.

"These are the words of Him who holds the 7 stars in his right hand & walks among the 7 golden lampstands: `I know your deeds, your hard work & your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked men, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, & have found them false. You have persevered & have endured hardships for my name, & have not grown weary.’"

Isn’t that a great description of a church? We’d be proud to have Jesus say something like that about us, wouldn’t we? But Jesus doesn’t stop there. He goes on in vs. 4, "Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love."

I don’t imagine that their forsaking their first love happened in one giant step. It wasn’t that just one day they decided not to love God any more. It was a gradual thing.

For a while their love for God was so great & so infectious that people were drawn into their fellowship. Great sermons were preached, & wonderful things were happening. And they were known far & wide for their steadfast faithfulness, even in the face of persecution.

But then, people who used to pray a lot gradually stopped praying. People who may have been giving a lot gradually stopped giving. People who used to witness to the lost gradually stopped witnessing. Until finally, when Jesus looks at this church, He says, "This I have against you. You have forsaken your first love."

What is "first love" in God’s eyes? It is the love that first brought you to God. It is the love that you experienced when you saw the cross as it really was. It was when you realized that the blood of Jesus Christ was shed for your sin & you were overwhelmed with His amazing love.

You became a child of God, & you experienced His forgiveness. That’s first love.

First love looks at mountains of troubles & sees them as hills to conquer. First love looks at rivers of grief & worry that may arise in life & says, "That’s nothing. God & I together can swim through that."

First love looks at stumbling blocks & sees them as stepping stones that prove the power of God. First love cries out, "Just give us a mountain to climb. Give us a river to swim. Give us something to do to prove the greatness of God’s love & how powerful He really is." That’s first love.

How do you lose something as exciting & as wonderful as first love? I would think that we would take very good care of it, & never take a chance on losing it. But we can lose it. Sometimes it just disappears, vanishes, goes away. But how does that happen?

Find out next Sunday August 10th as we take a look at Losing Your First Love. I hope to see you in church...let's explore this together and help each other as we walk through these crazy times.
